In case you haven’t heard, this week Android released Oreo, the latest version of their operating system (Version 8.0 for those of you keeping score at home).

The new version of the world’s most popular operating system introduces a number of visual tweaks to make phone and tablet displays smoother and more fluid and some behind the scenes updates to keep Android devices running at peak performance.

One of these new features is the ability to turn on WiFi when close to a known access point. This will be a lifesaver for device battery life. Sure, you could just turn the WiFi on and off on your Android as you go about your daily life. But that’s kind of a pain. And how about those times you’ve turned off your WiFi to save battery power, then, when you think you’ve connected to WiFi at your favourite Cafe or Pub, wind up using a month’s worth of data streaming the latest GoT episode because you thought you were connected to the free WiFi.

And let’s not forget about security – keeping your WiFi off when you don’t need it is one of the best ways of keeping your beloved phone or tablet protected from the hackers who love to spy on unsecured public networks.

Like we said – a lifesaver.

Here’s the way it works: each time you connect to WiFi, Android will remember the location (provided you have location services enabled, of course). Every time you return to that known location, Android will automagically turn on the WiFi and connect you to the network.

Right – enough with the pregame show – here’s how to turn on this nifty feature in Android:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap on Network & Internet
  3. Select the WiFi Connection where you want to enable an automatic connection
  4. Select WiFi Preferences from the bottom of the screen
  5. Enable “Turn on WiFi Automatically”

That’s it!

Like we were saying – automatic WiFi connections are just the tip of the iceberg of new features in Oreo. There’s also improved Picture-in-Picture, built in Google Fonts, and improved second screen displays.

But don’t just take our word for it. Here’s a quick roundup of some of the other cool new features:
