BLACKBX WiFi and GDPR

BLACKBX WiFi and GDPR

BLACKBX WiFi and GDPR 920 526 Scott Calonico

It’s GDPR month! Yep, that’s right. Believe it or not, May 25, 2018 is right around the corner.

What’s so special about that date? Glad you asked. Because that’s when the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) takes effect, which applies to any organisation that handles EU residents’ personal data.

Why GDPR?

Ultimately, GDPR is a good thing for privacy. The GDPR law puts personal data back into the hands of the individual. Users will be able to see what data an organisation holds on them, download it, or even request to have it deleted.

Still confused? Here’s GDPR explained in two minutes:

What Does this have to do with my business?

Your business falls under GDPR if it:

  • Has an establishment in the EU
  • Provides goods or services to EU residents
  • Monitors the behaviour of EU residents

Which means that if you have a business in the EU and you’re offering WiFi for you customers and collecting data , such as email addresses, to verify their connection – GDPR applies to you. So after May 25, 2018, you’ll need to stay in compliance with GDPR law. Otherwise, you could be facing a fines of up to 4% of your revenue or up to 20 million Euros, whichever is greatest.

Yeah, they’re not kidding around.
